In a study conducted by the University of Phoenix, it was found that more than half of working adults are interested in changing their career. Professionals change their career for a number of reasons including but not limited to, salary, stress, or career advancement. Regardless of your reason, you will want to think thoroughly before signing your resignation papers. The following questions will help you determine if a career change is right for you.

Do I have room to grow in my current career?

One of the most common reasons behind a career change is boredom. Often a professional will feel that their experience and skills are not used to their full potential. If you find yourself seeking more of a challenge, talk to your supervisor to see if there are any opportunities to take on a project or advance to a new position. If you find that you have maximized all advancement opportunities, it may be time to seek a job that offers you more.

What will make me happy in my next job?

If you find that your job has reached a dead-end, ask yourself what your next job will have to provide in order for you to be happy. Of course, obvious factors like salary, location, and benefits will come into play, but think of what your past job didn’t offer. Are you looking for a flexible schedule? Opportunities for classes to develop your skills? Upward mobility? Consider what perks will benefit you and your professional development.

Am I ready to start over?

It can be intimidating to leave an industry that you have grown familiar with. As you transition to another career, you may be leaving behind a reputation that you worked hard to build. It can be challenging when things don’t go your way at first, but understand that you will be facing a new set of challenges. However, keep in mind that many of your skills are transferable. With a positive attitude, a good work ethic, and determination, you will be able to advance within your new career in no time.

Is it time to find another career?

Making the decision to switch your career, should not be taken lightly. Before you commit to anything, sit down and consider these questions. If you decide to change your career, embrace change and trust yourself. Use the relationships you have forged, utilize your skills, and lead with confidence as you enter the next chapter of your career.
